zKorean Daily #korean: 막상 막하하다: to match each other
저: 막상막하하다 is not correct translation.
correct translation for " to match each other" is 막상막하다.or 막상막하이다.
it is not correct to add 하다 after four word chinese phrase even in dictionary form
(for example 막상막하(莫上莫下), 막무가내,난공불락,난형난제, etc.)
but you can add "하다" after two word chinese word in dictionary form.
have to be fixed in new dictionary.
다른 외국인 :I do not know why you think that is the ‘rule’ and to do so is wrong.
Even Nate’s dictionary has it like that.
저: hmm i`ll explain for you in some example. maybe you found this on nate dictionary.
막상막하(莫上莫下) ―하다 match 《each other》;be equal
but ―하다 have to be removed or fixed to -이다 or -다.
let`s check out this almost same meanig word.난형난제(難兄難弟) (being) almost equal
why Is there not "-하다" in this case on dictionary?
the two words come from chinese rhetoric, and used as an adjective.
so in these cases, "다" or "이다" have to be used instead of "하다".
in short, dictionary is always not true. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="하하" /><!-- s:) -->
외국인: …no, you obviously don’t understand the parts of grammar.
"하다" is the verb form. The "다" is not the verb form.
When you use the "다" you are using it as an adjective.
Like those two socks are a "pair" because they "match each other".
Obviously "matches" is not a formal adjective. I'm simplifying.
And you wouldn't use "socks" in a proper example.Again, simplifying
Okay writing a better example. To say 그 둘은 막상막하다 would mean
"there is little difference between the two"
But saying 그 둘은 막상막하해 would mean they are (active voice) both the same.
Just because colloquially it is not used often doesn't mean it is incorrect
In Korean, "막상막하" by itself is a noun. While 막상막하하다 is a verb.
So by saying ~이다 you are saying "is *noun*" But ~하다 is the verb
So, that was a total waste of 10-or-so minutes.
It's not worth trying to explain grammar to someone.
Ignoring now and moving on. Next topic.
저 : "막상막하하다" is not verb ,rather adjective.
if you mean "하다" is for verb and "막상막하하다" is verb.
you cant understand 막상막하하다
s meaning.
i can say not to use "하다" after 막상막하
because 막상막하다 or 막상막하이다 is adjective <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="하하" /><!-- s:) -->
막상막하 itsef is noun in dictionary form.
in real life used as adjective 막상막하다 or 막상막하이다 .
in korean, there is no such verb "막상막하하다"
